Federal Tax Rebates

Federal Tax Credits Available for Window Replacement

The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 extends tax credits for energy efficiency upgrades to existing homes, including purchases made in 2012 and 2013. These residential tax credits cover up to 10% of the cost for energy-efficient new windows and other improvements that meet ENERGY STAR® qualifications.

Upgrades or replacement of windows, doors and skylights qualify for a tax credit of 10% of the cost, up to $500, with windows capped at $200.

Requirements:

• Must be ENERGY STAR qualified.

• Must be an existing home and your principal residence. New construction and rentals do not qualify.

• You do not have to replace all the windows, doors and skylights in your home to qualify. And it doesn’t need to be a replacement either – installing a new window where there wasn’t one previously (like in an addition) qualifies.

• Tax Credit does NOT include installation costs.

For more information about this tax credit and how to apply, visit the ENERGY STAR website.

Milgard Rebate VS. Federal Tax Credits

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

We’ve been receiving a lot of questions around the Milgard rebate and the federal tax credit. Specifically, what qualifies and what doesn’t qualify. So here is a brief overview of the programs, what qualifies and when they expire.

Federal Tax Credit

The government has outlined very specific criteria regarding what type of windows and doors you must purchase in order to qualify for the tax credit. All windows and doors must meet a .30 U-factor and a .30 SHGC or better. So you’re probably wondering how you’re supposed to know which windows will meet those requirements. No problem! Below are links to PDF files which outline all Milgard products that qualify. Choose the area (North, South, Rocky Mountain Region, East of Rockies) that best matches your location.

I live in the Northern U.S.

I live in the Southern U.S.

I live in the Rocky Mountain Region

I live East of the Rockies

Hopefully, this will clear things up a little bit. Keep in mind that the credit only applies to the product and not to the cost of installing the product. Also, the installation must occur between 2/1/09 and 12/31/10. To get more details about the federal tax credits I highly recommend visiting the Energy Star website here: www.energystar.gov

Milgard mail-in Rebate

The Milgard mail-in rebate is completely separate from the federal tax credit. Once again, the Milgard mail-in rebate is a completely separate program that is independent of the federal tax credit. Here is how it works: To qualify you must purchase Milgard Tuscany windows, and or, Classic patio doors. The windows, and doors, must be purchased with Milgard’s 3D MAZ energy package (ask your dealer for details) and breaks down to a $25 rebate per window and a $75 rebate per door for a maximum rebate of up to $750.

You must purchase your windows between March 13th, 2009 and June 30, 2009.

You must purchase a minimum of 5 Milgard replacement windows or doors, or a combination of both.

There is only one rebate available per household.

Hopefully this helps clear up any confusion about these two programs. Now is a great time to buy new windows and doors for your home as prices are extremely competitive and you’ll very likely see a substantial reduction in your monthly energy costs.

Make sure to fill out (and mail) your rebate forms by for the Milgard rebate no later than June 30th to qualify for the rebate!

Getting a Good Deal on Your Windows

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Right now is probably one of the best times in the last 10+ years to purchase new windows for your home or, to upgrade windows for your rental units. Of course, if you’re like most Americans (including myself) the last thing on your mind right now is making a large purchase. However, if you had planned to upgrade your windows to save money on energy costs then now is the time to take advantage of industry wide discounts which will dramatically improve the ROI (return on investment) of your window purchase.

Why are prices so much cheaper right now? There’s a couple of reasons why buying windows right now will save you a bunch of money. First, and foremost, we’re all aware of the ten thousand pound gorilla in the room. Simply put, the U.S. economy. The short and long term economic outlook for our country doesn’t look great right now and by all measures we’re currently in the middle of a recession. What this means is manufacturers of windows are doing whatever it takes to keep their output levels at or near where they’ve been in years past. Obviously, this is a major challenge but by offering short term discounts window manufacturers can keep their sales numbers up which will help keep their operations running.

The second, and less obvious, reason is that oil prices have absolutely tanked over the last six months. What does this have to do with the price of windows? That’s a great question. The first reason is that shipping costs of raw materials have decreased which, in turn, passes down as lower costs for the manufacturer. The second reason is that vinyl windows are a petroleum-based product. As such, as prices in oil rise and fall, so do the costs of the actual materials used to construct vinyl windows. These cost increases and (hopefully) decreases are inevitably passed on to the consumer.

With the dramatic drop in oil prices combined with the slow-down in our economy right now is the absolute best time to purchase new windows for your home. While it certainly is counter intuitive to go out and make large purchases right now, great deals can be found everywhere. Smart consumers will take advantage of this time and make smart purchases that will save them a bunch of money over the long term. New windows and doors just happen to fall into that category. Remember to get multiple quotes and don’t be afraid to ask for discounts! Good luck.
